Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dolly pay for the books? Here are a few of the most common questions we've received and some that the Dollywood Foundation receives, too

If there's a question we haven't answered, please contact us! We are happy to help.

  1. Does Dolly Pay for this herself?

No, each affiliate is responsible for all aspects or local program cost. Every affiliate chooses a service area by zip code. There are currently 26 Imagination Library affiliates in Colorado. We chose to provide books to children in Denver, starting with zip code 80205. All affiliates are funded by individual donors, corporate partners, events, Colorado Gives Day campaigns, and grants. We are a stand-alone 501c3 all donations are tax-exempt to the fullest extent of the law.

  2. Which children are eligible?

All children under the age of five are eligible to receive books. Stipulations from the Dollywood Foundation state that we must have enough funds to manage an entire zip code. As of June 2019, the Imagination Library of Denver service area includes 80205, 80211, and 80220. As more funding is secured, we will expand to include additional zip codes in the Denver Metro area.

  3. How do you register an eligible child?

Registration can be completed online, on-site at the United Way building on Mondays, or by completing and returning a registration brochure. Click here to sign up online.

  4. How are the books selected?

A national committee of early childhood literacy experts selects the books for the Imagination Library, which has included such well-loved classics as The Little Engine That Could, Spot Goes to the Farm, Snowy Day, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten.

The committee also determines an age-appropriate timeline for book themes including: visual and playful stimulation in year one; repetition and body awareness in year two; love, colors, and letters in year three; diversity of others and poetry in year four; and finally riddles, science, and appreciation in year five.

New titles are introduced each year so younger siblings may not receive the exact same books as their older siblings.

  5. Is it really free?

Yes! Imagination Library of Denver, in conjunction with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, was intended as a gift to all children, therefore it is absolutely free. It's funded by individual donors, corporate sponsors, events, and grants.

  6. Why are books available to all children verses just to those families who can’t afford books?

This is a gift to all of our children. It is our community uniting to give children the gift of reading. Like all gifts to children, you cannot choose one over another. We never want children to feel left out or singled out; therefore, the books are for all the children in the community.

  7. When will the books arrive?

Allow 8 – 12 weeks for the first book to be delivered after registering your child.
Not all books are shipped at the same time. Households enrolling children of different ages should expect books for each child to arrive at different times.

  8. What if I have multiple children?

All eligible children in zip codes 80205, 80211, 80220 may be registered for this program, even if a sibling is also registered.

  9. Who will use my child’s name and address?

Only the Dollywood Foundation for the express purpose of mailing the books. You and your child's name and address will never be shared, sold, or used for any purpose other than mailing books or parent surveys to study how we can make our program better.

  10. If I move, will the books be forwarded?

No. Due to the postage class, books can not be forwarded. Please contact us as soon as possible with your new address and phone number and we will update our database to ensure your child continues to receive their books!
